Upon arriving in Siem Reap, we looked for a guesthouse. I had been here as a student, so we revisited the same guesthouse from that trip.
We rented a tuk-tuk for our Angkor Wat sightseeing the next day — only 1,000 yen for two people for a whole day! Two days for 2,000 yen — unbelievably cheap.
We explored famous sites like Ta Prohm and Beng Mealea, the latter evoking the world of “Laputa: Castle in the Sky.” The driver knew how long each site would take, so we toured very efficiently.
One of our favorite local dishes was “Amok” — a Cambodian specialty made with coconut milk and fish. We found several places listed in Lonely Planet and kept going back for more.
Back then, we couldn’t rely on smartphones overseas, so we depended on guidebooks. In hindsight, that had its own charm.
As our return date approached, I personally wished to continue on to Thailand. However, since our round-trip budget flight was to and from Ho Chi Minh, we had to go back.
After safely returning to Ho Chi Minh, we made our way home. The first thing I ate back in Japan was a bowl of gyudon from Yoshinoya. There’s nothing quite like Japanese rice and convenience.
And thus, one journey came to an end. But surely, another adventure awaits.
